Valerie & Friends & Family
How would you describe yourself in 2-3 sentences? Please tell us about your personality.
I am a woman with character... simple, motivated to arrive with my best possible reults in competition.
Valerie, you have a young daughter. How do you manage being a world-class pro and a mum at the same time?
Margaux is now 8 years old. This is a management challenge for me; there needs to be a balance between Margaux's schooling and my competitions.
What does your daughter say about your recent success at the PWA World tour and the PWA Ulsan World Cup?
Margaux is proud of her mum- who won the 2009 PWA world tour and Ulsan. She speaks a lot about her traveling experiences with her friends and teachers.
With you and Karin Jaggi being two of the world’s best female surfers, you are close competitors. Is it possible to be a friend and competitor at the same time? How do you two get on?
Karin and I have known eachother a long time. On land we are friends. On the water we are rivals... there is a difference between land and sea.

Do you find it hard to be recognized by your male colleagues? Many still think windsurfing is a “male domaine”…
I think women are recognized by men in windsurfing, even if they sometimes have the impression that girls are only part of their budget allowance! I feel respected in my disciplines as I have a certain level of practice.
Do you think female professional athletes have more difficulties in finding sponsors and attention?
Yes, I think for girls it is a little harder to find sponsors. For my part, my sponsors help me a lot, and trust me.
Why did you decide to become a professional? And did you ever regret your decision?
Windsurfing is my first passion. I do not regret my decision regarding my profession. Competition is part of my life, and I am very involved with public relations.
What have been the greatest set-backs you had to overcome during your career?
I have not known large failures in my career. It is advised to appreciate both the good and the bad, then re-ask the question.
Who supports you and gives you the energy to fight?
I is my desire to win that gives me the energy to fight. As well, the satisfaction of honoring my sponsors and myself.
The support I had with my husband this year has gone into other ways last September, but he is still with me in my heart.
What is your next championship goal?
I want to dedicate next season to the memory of my husband, who would have liked to follow me as I again attempt to honor my sponsors.
Where do you see yourself in ten years’ time?
Very good question, only god knows! I now live on a daily basis- because the loss of a loved one makes its mark, and changes the way we see life.
