Cool outdoor adventures in “Cold Hawaii”

Wave Surfing in Klitmoller

PWA premiere in Denmark

If you are into some surfing action, white sandy beaches and an attractive nature, you don’t necessarily have to go to Hawaii. “Cold Hawaii” is much closer: that’s the name of the region around Klitmøller in Denmark where the Professional Windsurfing Association’s (PWA) World Cup will take place between September 13 and 19.

Klitmøller is in the north of Jutland and is a part of Denmark’s first national park. This park, by the name of Thy, is also called “the last piece of wilderness in Denmark”: On 25.000 hectares, visitors will find unique coastal and dune landscapes, large lakes and a game reserve.

In this pristine scenery, the elements wind and water are predominant. It is therefore only logical that Klitmøller is now holding the prestigious Wave Windsurf Cup of the PWA. PWA tour manager Rich Page explains: “We from the PWA are very happy to finally stop at Klitmøller during the World Cup. This place is not just a well-established wave surfing spot, the PWA surfers have been coming here to train for a long time. Its place on the tour is hence long overdue.”

Spectators will witness an exciting competition with the world’s 48 best wave windsurfers. The waves will be as high as 6 metres in Klitmøller: they form on their long way from Iceland and the Faroe Islandes to Thy’s coast. If the conditions are ideal, the champions will be jumping up to 15 meters high.

Nature and more in Cold Hawaii

Before or after the event, there’s a lot more to discover in Klitmøller: many bike and hiking routes, for example, either passing the dunes or leading through the pinewoods. Many rare birds live here: e.g. bitterns, bearded reedlings and kittiwakes. The fishers’ villages Klitmoller and Agger are also worth a visit. In Thy, there is the Sydthy-spa and the Pynten wellness center.
