Storms over Europe

In the eyes of windsurfers the best time for an extraordinary surf session is mostly not summertime but autumn and spring, especially at Europe's fresh water spots, far away from the coast lines. This is the time when the big low pressure areas come over the continent and bring stormy winds and waves to the smallest lakes.

Rainer Maria Rilke verses about autumn: “And over all your fields unleash the winds.” Even though the popular German poet does not, among others, talk good about autumn and mourns warmth and green meadows, he knew one thing: in this period it can be really stormy in Germany.

Best Period to surf in Europe
So the poets say exactly what the windsurfers think: Autumn and Spring are the best times to surf in Europe. Whoever thinks that European surfers put away their board at the end of each summer and wallow in memories about sun and beach, could not be any wronger. Cause when the television news announce the first lows, which bring wind and cold air, no real windsurfer can stay on its cosy couch. Equipped with a neoprene suit and small storm sails, they go out to find perfect surf conditions. The water is not so icy, because even though the outside temperature hits rock bottom, the water temperature of the coasts and lakes is normally still warm from the summer. Also in spring the lows often bring rainy weather but seldom frost.

A Gift from Nature
A soccer player has perfect practice conditions every day and every hour. So he will probably not understand the fascination of being at the right place at the right time. But this is what it is all about: Waiting for the storm, taking time for choosing the right spot and to finally walking to the water with a sail, when the storm begins. In this moment, the storm is a gift from nature, which all surfers welcome with big smiles on their faces. To stand in the shower, feeling the own vitality after a perforce ride is enough compensation for all the effort. In the end, it`s not the ordinary things in life, but the things which are hard to get, that bring most joy.

Red Bull called for the Storm Chase

Red Bull also recognized the fascination of the autumn storms and in 2006 they organized the successful "Storm Chase" competition. Surfers from many European countries fought against the elements, choosing their own spot, but during the same low. The winner was not nominated by a jury, but by the surfers themselves. Steffi Wahl from Germany, who also scored excellent results on the PWA World Cup on Sylt, showed that even girls can last those radical conditions and cut a fine figure. In 2007 a similar event, the "Big Days" was on the schedule, which is taking advantage of the German autumn for a special windsurf contest.

Windsurfers know: The surf season really starts when the summer is over.
