Philip Köster – the next Robby Naish?
The PWA Windsurf World Cup at Gran Canaria (July 10th – 17th, 2009) is considered to be one of the most demanding ones of the tour. 15 years young Philip Köster now proved that he aims to set a new benchmark in wave windsurfing. He is the second youngest winner of a World Cup since Robby Naish over thirty years ago. Naish won with 13 years of age.
From the beginning on he dominated the fleet and left the world elite in wave windsurfing behind. In the direct competition of the single elimination, Köster scored higher than reigning World Champion Kauli Seadi (BRA). Eventually in the final, he beat Vice-World Champion Victor Fernandez (ESP).
Youngster Köster showed the most challenging maneuvers completely faultless. The conditions at Pozo were very demanding, the wind blew with six to eight wind forces, but Philip Köster managed difficult wave rides even in those conditions.
The German boy thereby underlined his extraordinary talent and his strong competition aibility, besides his small competition experience. Only five years ago, Philip Köster started windsurfing. Already last year, he called attention to himself at the Pozo event. Then, he presented the highest jump of the event and sailed to ninth place in his debut in the fleet of the grown-ups. 2008 he was called the “PWA Rookie of the Year”.
Philip’s parents emigrated from Germany to Gran Canaria. The manage a surf center at Vargas beach at Gran Canaria, where Philip and his sister Kyra grew up. Both visit a German school.
