It was Josh Angulo the US-borne windsurf pro who moved to the exotic island of Sal/Cape Verde on on his search for perfect waves and sailing conditions. And what he found there was some kind of paradise, not as green as the Hawaiian Islands but offering the same outstanding waveriding conditions like the so called "Mecca of windsurfing" - the island of Maui.
Thanks to his personal engagement his dream came true in 2007 when he succeeded in bringing the world elite of pro wavesailors to his new home for the first ever windsurfing world cup on Cape Verde. The historic 2007 Cabo Verde event set the bar to an all-time high for professional wavesailing. Epic conditions welcomed the compeditors: over mast high waves and perfect winds.
Wherever you go to organize a windsurfing event, the chance to have such gorgeus conditions exactly during the days, the event is held, is like a roulette game. This is why the first ever windsurfing pro event on Cape Verde made history and brought windsurfing in waves on another level.
So it was a full house once again for the top names in the sport on the island of Sal in 2008. The first event of the new season took place on the island of Sal from 07. till 16. March and a strong forecast for early in the event stayed true and a good swell with mast-high waves reeled down the racetrack of the main event spot at Ponta Preta.
In the end it was the reigning wave world champion Kauli Seadi from Brasil who made it through the eliminations up to the top and so had a perfect start into the new season. Local hero Josh Angulo finished second and former wave world champion Jason Polakow from Australia became third.
"It’s the perfect start to the season for me", grinned Seadi. "New year, new gear and a win to polish it off. It means a lot to beat someone as talented as Josh in waves of such quality."
Josh Angulo was instrumental once again in organizing this event in his back yard. "I’m glad we got this event together again. It means everything to me to have riders of this quality here, plus I’m happy for Kauli as he’s an exceptional sailor, so I’m just looking forward to seeing the contract signed to have the PWA back in 2009."
Special thanks go to the event sponsors and the people of Cabo Verde for welcoming the pro tour back once again, and our congratulations to Josh, Kauli and Jason for their achievements.
A personality story on Kauli Seadi the exceptional wave and freestyle talent from Brasil is already in preperation and will be available here in our press lounge soon.
