Around Christian Island on a RS:X board

Usually, they are only used for Olympic competitions: RS:X boards and sails. This windsurfing material is always the exact size and shape, so as to enable all competitors to start under the exact same conditions.

However, a group of Canadian and Argentinian surfers has now shown that there is much more potential in RS:X boards than to compete at the Olympics: sailing around an island, for example.

In July, Kevin Shuttle, David Hayes and Mariano Reutermann sailed from the Canadian coast around Christian island and back. The tour is 100 km long and took them 3.5 hours (including lunch break). They reached a speed of up to 44 km/h and, what is more: they show how these big boards and sails can be used to elegantly glide over the water - long distance!

By the way: a similar project, but in form of a competion, is the "Race around Fehmarn", which took place in Germany between 2007 and 2009. Sailors had to surf around the island Fehmarn on a total distance of app. 160 km.
