The 2009 season’s final & title races of the World Champions

The Colgate World Cup Sylt is one of the biggest water sports events in the world. Thrilling competitions, sensational sports, lifestyle and parties attract hundreds and thousands to the Brandenburger Beach every year. The 26th edition of the only Super Grand Slam once again promises to be a crowd puller.

From September 25th to October 4th, the windsurfing world elite meets in Westerland, all top sailors will be there. One star in the over 100 participants counting starters fleet will again be the 36-times World Champion Björn Dukerbeck, who collected his 10th victory at Sylt last year, and who names Germany’s utmost northern island his “second home”. All local fans can keep their fingers crossed for long runner Bernd Flessner, Normen Günzlein and of course Klaas Voget, sensational third last year.

All three disciplines are on the program, in freestyle and slalom surf legend Robby Naish, permanent guest at Sylt, will elect the World Champions. In wave-riding, only one missing competition will fix the pre decision for the World Championship’s crown. But that’s not the only reason why the windsurf-stars love to come to Sylt. “The cheering of thousands of spectators, the closeness to the fans, this really is something special.” says Björn Dunkerbeck.

At the Colgate World Cup Sylt there are no barriers. The spectators can chat with the top athletes, fans and sailors experience the windsurf-happening together. But while the windsurfers have to concentrate on their competitions, the visitors can stroll over the event area, inspect the latest windsurf-trends or take some refreshments in the 100-metres-long event tent. This also is the place for the event’s long party nights, which start every evening at 6.pm.

All experts are at one before the start of the Colgate World Cup Sylt: this will be a windsurf-festival of superlatives. Two reasons suggest that. This water sports highlight will be the final competition of this year’s PWA World Tour. So it’s not only about the event-victory in wave-riding, freestyle and slalom, but also about the titles of the World Champions in all three disciplines. Therefore, the excitement could hardly be topped amongst both sailors and spectators.

The local fans even have another reason for pleasant anticipation, because several German windsurfers will start of wide scoop. Above all the fledgling World Cup winner of Pozo Philip Köster. The only 15 years old super talent, who lives at Gran Canaria with his family, beat the whole world’s elite during his home game, and he is also considered as one of the secret favorites on Germany’s utmost northern island.

The shooting star is already compared with Robby Naish or Björn Dunkerbeck, but he remains modest. “The conditions at Sylt are very difficult for me, a single-digit place in wave-riding would already be great”, he calms the high expectations. But he adds: “When I take on, of course I do want to win.”

One will also see the 36times World Champion Björn Dunkerbeck amongst the front positions, who triumphed at “his island” for the tenth time in 2008. At the price giving ceremony he just mentioned dryly: “Ten victories are great, but eleven are even greater”, and though clarified, that the victory in slalom again will only be possible by passing over him.
