The International Funboard Class Association (IFCA) exists since 1985 and can rightly so claim itself the “mother” of all Windsurfing World Championship organizers.
Many associations get a piece of the action
The IFCA has obtained the rights on all Windsurfing World Champion titles in the funboard field by the International Sailing Association (ISAF), the worldwide governing body of all surf- and sailing associations. This includes disciplines like freestyle, wave and slalom. However, in the meantime the IFCA has completely handed over the holding of the popular Wave World Championship to the Professional Windsurfers Association (PWA). The Formula Windsurfing Class takes care of the course races (Racing) these days, and the International Speed Windsurfing Class (ISWC) takes responsibility for the young speedsurfing variant of funboard windsurfing.
IFCA today: freestyle and slalom
Currently the IFCA officially chooses the world champions in both freestyle and slalom, even though the Freestyle World Tour of the PWA plays a much more important role from an international perspective. According to the IFCA, Britain Dan Ellis is the best slalom surfer of 2007, whereas the first place of the PWA slalom competition was gained by the French windsurfing star Antoine Albeau. The high prize moneys being payed at the PWA Tour stops, for example, create a serious obstacle for the IFCA. Even an officially accredited title stands back to that.
Up to this day, the IFCA has organized the European, Youth and World Championships in slalom and freestyle.
