Europe's greatest windsurfing magazin SURF again asked its readers to vote for the "Surfer of the Year" in the two categories "international" and "national". About 2.000 readers elected their surf idol 2008.
Windsurfing legend Björn Dunkerbeck won the international trophy for the third time in a row. In the national category two pro surfers broke away from the rest of the nominees. Finally it was again and also for the third time multiple German windsurf champion Bernd Flessner who won the award, Klaas Voget became second.
„This year it was pretty close in the national category. Shortly before the end of the voting period Bernd Flessner made his way to the top“, chief editor Andreas Erbe said.
It was no surprise to see again Dunkerbeck and Flessner on the podium. Even if both sportsmen with an age of 39 years are no young guns anymore, these two pro sailors are extraordinary athletes in the world of water sports. Both proved their status with impressing results in the last season.
Bernd Flessner won the German Windsurf Cup; Björn Dunkerbeck became PWA Slalom 42 Vize-World Champion and ISWC Speed-European Champion. The price giving ceremony took place on the first Saturday at the world's biggest water sports exhibition boot in Düsseldorf. The awards were handed over by publisher Konrad Delius, chief editor Andreas Erbe and „boot“- project manager Goetz-Ulf Jungmichel.
Nominees for the international category were: Antoine Albeau (France), Marcilio Browne (Brazil), Jose „Gollito“ Estredo (Venezuela), Victor Fernandez (Spain), Karin Jaggi (Swizerland), Daida Moreno (Spain), Sarah-Quita Offringa (Aruba), Antxon Otaegui (Spain) and Kauli Seadi (Brazil).
Nominees for the national category were: Gunnar Asmussen, Max Droege, Normen Günzlein, Thorsten Luig, Sebastian Kördel, Philip Köster, Andre Paskowski, Oliver-Tom Schliemann and Klaas Voget.
